A very unusual little collection - one that brings together guitar-based numbers from a variety of African sources - then packages the whole thing with a relatively discreet sort of presentation! The styles here are mostly pre-funk, but offer up some creative use of the guitar - or the "dry guitar", if you will - in tracks that mostly have a relatively spare sort of sound, and which mix guitar with bits of percussion, vocals, flute, and other instrumentation. Titles include "Sax Jive" by Leribe, "Castle Beer" by William Siwale & Friends, "Jumbe" by Elija Ishmael, "Tumshukuru" by W John Ondolo, "Ulayinda" by George Kazoka, "Khukhaua" by Jimmy Amukamua and "Love Is Love" by Alemanyo Eshintay. V.A. - Last Kind Words (1926-1953), LP Mississippi, 2008. If you don't know Mississippi Records by now, this is a great place to start. The label specialises in unearthing absolute gems of rare and ancient music from around the world. The first issue of this compilation was released in 2006 and thankfully has been given a repress allowing more heads to swoon under the stunning goods on offer. "Last Kind Words" compiles 14 amazingly well recorded (considering the abilities of the era) blues songs from the likes of Geechie Wiley, Kid Prince Moore, Robert Petway, Sister O.M. Terrell, Lottie Kimbrough, and Isiah Nettles besides a load more fantastically monikered singers from the 20's and 30's designed to be enjoyed by enthusiasts and those new to the the genre. The presentation is immaculate, featuring a full colour picture sleeve looking like some jazzed up Lowry, and as previously mentioned, the sound quality is excellent. Ultimately accessible and utterly heartwarming. Tip!
